Born in Oklahoma in 1927, son of a land man, T. Boone Pickens graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1951 with a degree in geology. He married at 20 and had four children. He took a job as a roughneck for a refinery and then as a geologist with Phillips Petroleum. Citing difficulties with company bureaucracy, he resigned to work for himself.

Unfortunately, even though the business is strong, the fourth generation of the family does not seem inclined to want to take over the family business, so, looking ahead several years, Groll is not sure what to do with the family owned business.
