SBA Chief Karen Mills Not An Advocate for Small Business

As reported in a August 7 article in the Wall Street Journal (SBA Chief: ‘I Know What It Will Take’), a reporter asked Karen Mills, chief administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA), whether she supports the proposed ‘pay or play’ mandate for health care reform. Of course, ‘pay or play’ refers to proposed federal legislation that will require employers to either provide health insurance to their employees or pay a penalty to the government.

Congress Needs to Hear from You

Members of the U.S. House and Senate began their summer recess on August 1. Most are now in their home districts, so it’s the perfect time to contact your House and Senate representatives (find them at http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml) and tell them, via email, phone call, fax or letter, you do not want federally mandated health insurance provided by employers. At least not unless there’s an exclusion for companies with less than 100 employees.

They’re raising money for Camp Mak-A-Dream – a camp that provides week-long wilderness experiences for children with cancer. The Coleman Company is a manufacturer of camping equipment. Coleman believes that “spending time in the outdoors benefits body, mind and spirit”.

Suspend Your 401(k) Match?

Searching for ways to stem losses, many companies have opted to suspend 401(k) matching. Many more are considering it.

Is it a smart move? Unthinkable?

Good question.

On the one hand, it’s simple. Mr. employee, would you prefer a small cut in pay or a layoff? After all, if the company runs out of money nobody will have a job. No telling how long the recession will last.

Free Loans From the SBA ($35K ARC Loan)

The SBA has announced a program to offer $35,000 interest free loans to small businesses. The government will pay the interest – at prime plus two percent – directly to the lender. The government will also provide a 100 percent guarantee against principal loss.

The loans are part of the America’s Recovery Capital (ARC) program approved by Congress in February.
